Omega 3 fatty acids

Studies suggest that polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids are necessary in the diet of pregnant females for normal embryonic growth and development. However, in adult cats and dogs, there is still not enough evidence. While they are not essential for adult dogs and cats, omega 3 fatty acids can provide a number of functional benefits, including improving the condition of the skin and coat and acting as anti-inflammatory agents. They modulate the production of eicosanoids, with the eicosanoids resulting from the metabolism of omega 3 fatty acids being less stimulating of the inflammatory response than those resulting from omega 6 fatty acids. Moreover, omega 3 fatty acids are the precursors of resolvins and protectins, counter-regulatory substances of inflammation that serve as agonists for endogenous anti-inflammatory mechanisms and play a significant role in the resolution of inflammation. Additionally, in older animals, polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids help prevent the deterioration of cognitive function by improving brain oxygenation.
